Psalms 19:14 – Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
I know we have all been here at one point and time. We were either raised in the church ,so we went because our parents made us, or we actually did enjoy it, but didn’t know exactly what a relationship with christ was. Our relationship with God cannot be based off our parents, grandparents or whomever took us to church. As we grow older it has to start to become about us and him. We have to make that decision. It’s at this moment in life that we learn that worship is a lifestyle.
I do not have anything against the word religion. I just more so like the word lifestyle in this context. A lifestyle is something you work to maintain. You eat, sleep, and breathe it for some people. Its something you care about so you put the time in. That’s exactly how our relationship with God should be. We should constantly be grooming it and working at it, studying it. All the things that make it priority in our life.
Now that I’ve explained the first steps, I’ll explain surface faith more. For me, personally growing up I loved God. I went to the youth groups, brought all my friends. I prayed before bed and before I ate. Just like most of us do. I would read a little of the bible here and there. I would be the “preacher” out of my group of friends etc. All these things we believe are enough right? I’ve heard, ” I’m a good person.” ” God knows my heart he knows I’m busy but I love him”… etc We say these things and feel that’s the answer but God wants to be priority in our lives and he wants to be closer to us.
Now I am not saying that people who do this are wrong or don’t love God. When that is all you know then that is all God will hold you accountable too. If that is your very best in him and that’s what you have been convicted is enough then that’s your walk with him. No one can know or examine the heart but God.
Colossians 1: 9-10
However, learning and growing in something isn’t bad either. Upon closer study of the bible I learned that your faith and your walk with God is not just about the surface things. Yes we may not be able to be on our knees all day in communication with God, but we are able to always have an open heart communication with him. He hears the words we don’t say, because he can read our hearts.
When we wake up, what is the first thing on our minds? Do we pray or do we jump out the bed to rush to get ready? Do we have personal or family devotion to start off the day with jesus?.. At one point, all of these things were foreign to me. When I woke up I got ready and prayed at breakfast and kept it moving until the spirit convicted me that how I start my morning is how my day goes. If I’m short tempered or annoyed or just simply living the fast paced rush of society then 9 times out of 10 I’m not gonna be the most christlike in responding to the days ins and outs. We are a microwave generation. We want everything right then and there. We don’t want to take the long journey. We just want what’s on the surface so we can hurry up and move on to something else. That’s the new normal in todays world but he said that if we put morning and evening devotion, open heart communication, and evening noon and morning prayer into our lifestyle then that is what sets the tone for the day. Jesus is your picker upper.
Philippians 4:8 – Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
As the day goes on. Are we being that light he talks about in Matthew?
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16, KJV
Titus 2:7-8 – In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
Part two on losing our worldly covering and being covered by Gods character in result of a deeper walk with christ will be coming soon…
